There is an old adage that goes something like this,
Never discuss religion or politics
Behind this adage is the notion that something about the natures of religion and politics is improper for normal conversation. And why not? Religious and political ideologies are often extremely personal, subject to almost no outside inquiry, and speak to the fundamental philosophy of the individual. As human beings wishing to keep our lives free of any discomfort, confusion, uncertainty, or awkwardness it only make sense to avoid the two subjects we feel are most likely to usher in these dreaded feelings.
However there is another way. If we choose to be intellectually honest, open to new and unfamiliar ideas and initially skeptical of all ideas, if we choose to hold nothing as too sacred to be legitimately questioned and explored then we might find a new adage to be much more useful and engaging,
Often discuss religion and politics
Religion and politics are arguably the two most influential aspects of civilization. They begin and end wars, endorse charity, endorse genocide, open our minds to new possibilities, harshly stifle free inquiry, bring out the best in us, bring out the worst. Religious and political ideologies have both saved and murdered billions. In light of their importance how could we possibly ignore them, or even casually omit them from conversation and dialogue?
As I begin writing and sharing I intend to ask many more questions than pontificate my own answers. I will focus on religion and politics because they are pertinent, controversial, and undeniably important. Undoubtably I will scrutinize and ask questions about many other things as well. But as a human, an American, and an individual, I feel compelled to ponder the important questions in hopes of attaining a betterment of my understanding and of myself.
But why share this with you? Because no one exists in a vacuum and the input, questions, and thoughts of many can bring about the growth of knowledge and the obliteration of ignorance. Idealistic? Yes, but my hope is that you may find that engaging with me and my writing can help to make that ideal a reality.
